Rod Smith is an aboriginal artist with roots in Campbell River, B.C. and Owekeeno (Rivers Inlet) B.C.. Rod signs all his work Galuyagmi which means ìGreat First Birthî. He began his artistic career about 12 years ago, after leaving the automotive industry. Wood is the medium of choices for Rod, and he has created many beautiful pieces utilizing Basswood, which comes from the Linden Tree, Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Alder, Pine and of course Canadian Maple. Rod received his training in the traditional manner, learning from his father, Harris Smith Lalkawilas, one of his main influences. He is also inspired by the work of his brother Steve Smith DlaíKwagila, Robert Davidson, the Hunt family, and all of the old masters who came before.
